Cryptantha simulans Greene
Habit: Annual 5--45 cm, slender, pale green. Stem: 1, branches few; generally strigose, occasionally ascending rough-hairy. Leaf: scattered, lowest +- persistent during flower; 1--5(7) cm, linear to narrow-oblanceolate, abaxial, margin bristles ascending, fine, +- bulbous-based. Inflorescence: generally in 2s or 3s, occasionally 1s, few-flowered; bracts 0; pedicel elongated in fruit, 0.5--1 mm, erect to ascending. Flower: calyx 2--3 mm, 4--7(8) mm in fruit, constricted above, deciduous, lobes lance-linear, tips spreading, margin ascending-fine-bristly, midvein +- thickened with many short, recurved, coarse bristles; corolla deciduous, limb 1.5--2 mm diam, appendages minute. Fruit: nutlets 3--4, 1.9--2.2(2.5) mm, wide-ovate, dense-grainy, sparse-tubercled, +- gray, dull, margin rounded, base truncate, tip +- beaked; abaxially low-rounded, ridge 0; adaxially flat, attachment scar edges not raised, abutted, wide-forked but not gapped at base; axis not to nutlet tips.
Ecology: Dry gravelly sites, disturbed areas, generally open conifer forest; Elevation: (250)450--2600 m. Bioregional Distribution: KR, NCoRH, CaR, n SNF, SNH, Teh, TR, e PR, MP; Distribution Outside California: to eastern Washington, western Idaho. Flowering Time: May--Aug
