Habit: Annual 10--50 cm. Stem: branches +- throughout; strigose and spreading-rough-hairy. Leaf: occasionally lowest opposite; 0.5--3 cm, linear-oblong to lance-linear, midveins sunken adaxially, dense-rough-hairy to bristly, hairs ascending. Inflorescence: in 2s or 3s; bracts 0, occasionally 1 near base; pedicel < 0.5 mm, spreading. Flower: calyx 1.5--2 mm, 3--4 mm in fruit, deciduous, lobes linear-oblong, hairs +- tan, dense, +- ascending long-shaggy, especially on margin, midvein not thickened, sparse-hairy, not bristly; corolla limb 2--6 mm diam, appendages white or yellow. Fruit: nutlet 1(2), 1.5--2 mm, lance-ovate, dark brown, +- smooth, +- shiny, margin rounded, base wide-truncate, tip acute; abaxially low-rounded, ridge 0; adaxially +- flat, ridge sharp-angled, attachment scar edges abutted entire length, raised, forked at base; axis not to nutlet tip(s).
Ecology: Rocky or gravelly, generally non-serpentine soils, generally open conifer forest, chaparral; Elevation: 120--1750 m. Bioregional Distribution: NW (exc NCo), CaR, n SNH (Butte Co.); Distribution Outside California: southwestern Oregon. Flowering Time: Apr--Jul
