Cryptantha leiocarpa (Fisch. & C.A. Mey.) Greene
Habit: Annual 5--20(40) cm, often +- mat-forming. Stem: branches many, from base, becoming decumbent or prostrate; strigose to rough-hairy; hairs ascending to spreading. Leaf: 1--3.5 cm, linear to narrow-oblanceolate, strigose to rough-hairy or bristly, hairs ascending; some bristles bulbous-based. Inflorescence: in 1s or 2s (3s), dense, 1--3 flower, not elongated in fruit; bracts generally leaf-like throughout; pedicel generally 0. Flower: calyx 1.5--2 mm, 2.5--4 mm in fruit, late-deciduous, lobes lance-linear, dense-strigose and rough-hairy, hairs ascending, midvein +- thickened, bristles spreading, +- tan; corolla late-deciduous, limb 1--2.5(3.5) mm diam, appendages pale yellow. Fruit: nutlets (3)4, 1.6--2 mm, narrow-ovate to ovate, generally mottled, +- smooth, shiny (dull), margin rounded, base generally rounded, tip acute; abaxially rounded, ridge 0; adaxially generally low-rounded, attachment scar edges not raised, abutted entire length or occasionally short forked-gapped at base; axis to or beyond nutlets.
Ecology: Sandy soils, coastal dunes, beaches; Elevation: < 100(250) m. Bioregional Distribution: NCo, CCo, SCo; Distribution Outside California: coastal southern Oregon. Flowering Time: Mar--Aug
