Cryptantha inaequata I.M. Johnst.
Habit: Annual 5--40 cm, erect; root occasionally red-purple. Stem: branches 0 to throughout, especially from base, generally sparse, ascending; rough-hairy and strigose especially near base, hairs generally spreading. Leaf: many, scattered; 1.5--4.5(5) cm, narrow-oblanceolate to linear, strigose to +- rough-hairy with bulbous-based bristles, especially abaxially. Inflorescence: in 1s or 2s, +- dense, flowers +- 2-rowed; bracts 0 or occasionally few, especially near base; pedicels 0.5--1.5 mm, generally ascending. Flower: calyx 1.5--2.5 mm, 2.5--4 mm in fruit, persistent, symmetric, lobes wide-lanceolate, dense-spreading-bristly, especially on midvein, midvein +- thickened; corolla late-deciduous, limb 1.5--4 mm diam, +- flat, appendages yellow. Fruit: nutlets (3)4, 1.3--1.7 mm (1 > others), ovate to narrow-triangular, brown, fine-grainy, pale tubercled, shiny to +- dull, margin generally a +- flat narrow rim, occasionally sharp-angled; abaxially low-rounded, ridge 0; adaxially biconvex, +- sparse-tubercled, attachment scar edges not raised, abutted near tip, wide-flare-gapped at base; axis beyond nutlets.
Ecology: Gravelly to clay soils, rocky slopes, washes, creosote-bush scrub, desert woodland; Elevation: < 1400 m. Bioregional Distribution: e D; Distribution Outside California: to southern Nevada, southwestern Utah, northwestern Arizona. Flowering Time: Mar--May
