Cryptantha hooveri I.M. Johnst.
Habit: Annual 5--15 cm. Stem: erect, branches 0 or at base; dense-strigose to rough-hairy. Leaf: +- many, scattered, lowest opposite; 1--2.5 cm, linear to narrow-spoon-shaped, generally folded to inrolled; strigose to ascending-hairy, hairs bulbous-based abaxially. Inflorescence: head-like, only lowest flowers in each developing fruit; bracts scattered, thread-like; pedicel not elongated in fruit, < 0.5 mm, +- spreading. Flower: calyx 1.5--3 mm, 4--6 mm in fruit, persistent, lobes +- linear, margins dense-strigose to ascending rough-hairy, midvein not thickened, long spreading-bristly; corolla limb generally <= 1 mm diam. Fruit: nutlets 3--4, 1.2--1.5 mm, triangular- to wide-ovate, gray or tan, occasionally mottled, fine-grainy, shiny, margin +- sharp-angled to obtuse or +- flat at base, base wide-truncate, tip acute; abaxially low-rounded, tubercled, ridge 0; adaxially biconvex, sparse-papillate, attachment scar edges not raised, abutted +- entire length, wide-triangular-flare-gapped at base; axis to nutlets or not.
