Cryptantha gracilis Osterh.
Habit: Annual 10--35 cm, slender. Stem: erect, branches 0 or throughout, decumbent to erect; strigose and rough-hairy to short-bristly. Leaf: 1--3.5 cm, linear to narrow-oblanceolate, dense-bristly. Inflorescence: in 1s or 2s (3s), generally dense; bracts 0; pedicels 0. Flower: calyx 1.5--2 mm, 2--3 mm in fruit, deciduous, lobes lanceolate to narrow-ovate, generally uniformly tufted soft-hairy, hairs ascending; corolla limb 1--2.5 mm diam, appendages yellow. Fruit: nutlet generally 1 (if 2--3, then 1--2 small, undeveloped), 1.7--2.1 mm, lanceolate to narrow-ovate, smooth, shiny, margin rounded to generally sharp-angled, base wide-truncate; abaxially +- flat, spine +- concave basally; adaxially biconvex, attachment scar edges abutted to +- gapped, especially basally, or even occasionally overlapped, edges narrow-forked at base, occasionally triangular-gapped at base; axis not to nutlet tip.
Ecology: Sandy to rocky soils, dry slopes, creosote-bush scrub, Joshua-tree and pinyon/juniper woodland; Elevation: 730--2400 m. Bioregional Distribution: SNE, e DMoj; Distribution Outside California: to eastern Washington, southern Idaho, western Colorado, northern Arizona. Flowering Time: Mar--Jun
