Habit: Annual 10--40 cm, stout. Stem: branches generally throughout (0), spreading; strigose and rough-hairy to bristly. Leaf: 1--4(5) cm, linear to narrow-lanceolate, bristles spreading, some bulbous-based. Inflorescence: in 1s, flowers occasionally clustered, generally open in age; bracts generally 0; pedicel not elongated in fruit, < 0.5 mm, ascending. Flower: calyx 3--4 mm, 6--10 mm in fruit, constricted above, late-deciduous, lobes linear-oblong, tips erect to spreading, dense-strigose to rough-hairy, midvein thickened, with many, 3--4 mm, +- spreading bristles; corolla limb 1.5--2.5 mm diam, appendages minute, pale yellow. Fruit: nutlets generally 1--2, 2--2.5 mm, lanceolate, smooth to irregularly low-papillate, generally mottled, shiny, margin rounded, base rounded to truncate, tip +- long-beaked; abaxially low-rounded, ridge obscure, narrow; adaxially +- flat, attachment scar edges not raised, abutted near tip, variably gapped lower 1/2, narrow-triangular-gapped at base; axis not to nutlet tips.
Ecology: Stabilized, +- silty, fine sand deposits, creosote-bush scrub; Elevation: 140--250 m. Bioregional Distribution: w DSon (Borrego Valley area); Distribution Outside California: southern Arizona, northwestern Mexico. Flowering Time: Jan--May
