Cryptantha flaccida (Douglas ex Lehm.) Greene.
Habit: Annual 15--50 cm, erect, slender, wiry. Stem: branches above to throughout, appressed-hairy, +- pale green. Leaf: lowest occasionally opposite; 2--6 cm, +- linear, pale green; sparse-appressed-hairy. Inflorescence: in 1s to 5s; bracts 0; pedicel < 0.5 mm, erect. Flower: calyx 2--3 mm, 3--4.5(5) mm in fruit, +- persistent, base asymmetric, lobes +- linear, margins strigose to ciliate, midvein thickened, with +- dense-tufted, spreading, conspicuous recurved or hooked bristles generally basally encrusted with exudate; corolla limb 1--5(6) mm diam, appendages +- yellow. Fruit: nutlet 1, 1.8--2.3 mm, lance-ovate, +- smooth, +- shiny, margin rounded, basally swollen, base +- acute to narrow-truncate, tip long-beaked; abaxially rounded, ridge 0; adaxially rounded, attachment scar edges not raised, abutted to overlapped entire length, rarely triangular-gapped at base; axis to < 1/2 nutlet.
Ecology: Common; semi-barren, gravelly, loose soils, rocky sites, washes, slopes, ridges; Elevation: < 1700(2250) m. Bioregional Distribution: CA-FP, w MP; Distribution Outside California: to Washington, Idaho. Flowering Time: Apr--Jul
