Cryptantha fendleri (A. Gray) Greene
Habit: Annual 10--50 cm, erect. Stem: generally 1, branches 0 below, generally many above; spreading to ascending, dense-strigose and spreading-rough-hairy. Leaf: many, 1--5 cm, linear to narrow-oblanceolate; appressed- and ascending-rough-hairy and bristly; abaxial bristles bulbous-based. Inflorescence: in 1s or 2s, generally open; bracts generally 0 (1--2 near base); pedicel generally not elongated in fruit, +- 0.5 mm, +- ascending. Flower: calyx 1.5--2.5 mm, 3.5--6(7.5) mm in fruit, deciduous, +- asymmetric, lobes linear to lance-linear, generally constricted above, tip spreading, margin strigose, midvein thickened, coarse-bristly; corolla +- deciduous, limb 0.5--1(1.5) mm diam, appendages 0 or minute, white. Fruit: nutlets generally 4, 1.4--2 mm, +- similar, lanceolate, gray or mottled, smooth, shiny, margin rounded to +- angled, base rounded to narrow-truncate, tip elongate; abaxially rounded, ridge 0; adaxially +- flat, attachment scar edges not raised, +- abutted entire length, widened to a triangular pit at base; axis +- to nutlets.
Ecology: Sand dune, sandy soils, sagebrush scrub; Elevation: 2200 m. Bioregional Distribution: W&I (Little Cowhorn Valley); Distribution Outside California: to Washington, Montana, Nebraska, New Mexico. Flowering Time: Jun--Aug
