Cryptantha crymophila I.M. Johnst.
Habit: Perennial herb, tufted, 13--40 cm; caudex woody, branched. Stem: stems many, leafy; sharp-bristly. Leaf: basal rosettes generally many; 4--10 cm; basal oblanceolate to acute-oblong; adaxially strigose; abaxially appressed-sharp-bulbous-based-bristly. Inflorescence: +- head-like, dense above with axillary clusters below, not elongated in fruit; pedicel generally +- not elongated in fruit, 1--3.5 mm. Flower: calyx 4--5 mm, 9--15 mm in fruit, dense-sharp-+- yellow-bristly; corolla deciduous, aging white to off-white, tube 3--5 mm, limb 4--7(8) mm diam, appendages yellow. Fruit: nutlets generally 4, 4.5--5.5(6) mm, +- elliptic, +- brown, +- dull, margin narrow-winged; abaxially +- flat, +- smooth, ridge 0; adaxially +- smooth, attachment scar edges gapped entire length, edges not raised; axis to nutlets or beyond.
Ecology: Rocky volcanic semi-barren soils, scree; Elevation: 2600--3200 m. Bioregional Distribution: n&c SNH (Alpine, Tuolumne cos.). Flowering Time: Jul--Aug
