Cryptantha confertiflora (Greene) Payson
Habit: Perennial herb 13--45 cm; caudex woody, branched. Stem: erect, many, gray-green; tomentose below, strigose and sparse-bristly above. Leaf: generally many basal rosettes; 3--12 cm; basal leaves +- oblanceolate, gray-green, dense-strigose, abaxially with bulbous-based bristles. Inflorescence: generally dense, +- head-like above, interrupted, with scattered smaller axillary clusters below; pedicel generally not elongated in fruit, 0--1 mm. Flower: calyx 6--10 mm, 9--14 in fruit, strigose and spreading-bristly; corolla yellow, limb 8--12 mm diam, tube 9--13 mm. Fruit: nutlets generally 4, 3.5--4 mm, wide-ovate to triangular, smooth, gray, +- shiny, margins sharp-angled; abaxial ridge 0; adaxial attachment scar edges abutted to +- overlapped, edges not raised; axis 3--7 mm beyond nutlets.
Ecology: Common. Dry, rocky soils; Elevation: 1050--3100(3350) m. Bioregional Distribution: s SNH, SnBr, SNE, DMtns; Distribution Outside California: to northeastern Arizona, southwestern Utah. Flowering Time: May--Jul Note: Heterostylous.
