Cryptantha celosioides (Eastw.) Payson
Habit: Biennial to short-lived perennial herb, 15--50 cm; caudex not woody, generally unbranched. Stem: 1--many, lateral 0 or generally < central stem; strigose, spreading-bristly, especially lower 1/2. Leaf: 1--few basal rosettes; 2.5--9 cm; basal +- wide-spoon-shaped, thick, gray-green, dense-strigose to +- tomentose, bristles generally appressed, bulbous-based; cauline oblong, spreading-sharp-bristly. Inflorescence: dense, generally cylindric; pedicel not elongated in fruit, 0.5--2 mm. Flower: calyx 3--5 mm, 7.5--10 mm in fruit, dense-spreading-bristly; corolla deciduous, tube 3--5 mm, aging +- off-white, limb 7--10 mm diam, appendages yellow. Fruit: nutlets 2--4, 3.3--3.8 mm, ovate to elongate-ovate, +- dull, margin a +- flat narrow rim; abaxially +- flat, irregularly tubercled, ridge narrow near tip, obscure near base; adaxially +- obscurely tubercled; attachment scar edges abutted to +- gapped entire length, edges not raised.
Ecology: Barren volcanic scree, talus slopes; Elevation: 1550--1920 m. Bioregional Distribution: e Wrn; Distribution Outside California: to eastern Washington, Montana, to Canada, northern Great Plains. Flowering Time: Jun--Aug
