Coronilla varia L.
Habit: Erect to spreading or vine-like, to 1 m. Stem: angled, hairs 0 to sparse. Leaf: stipule tips dark; petiole 0 to short; leaflets 11--19, 1--2 cm, obovate to oblong, glabrous. Inflorescence: head-like. Flower: calyx 2-lipped, upper lip 1-lobed, lower 3-lobed, lobes < tube; corolla 1 cm, glabrous, wings white, enclosing keel, keel acute, tip purple. Fruit: with 3--12 segments, generally 2--6 cm, linear, longitudinally ridged, 4-angled. Chromosomes: 2n=24.
Ecology: Disturbed sites, fields, planted as cover along roadsides; Elevation: < 2200 m. Bioregional Distribution: n SN, ScV, expected elsewhere; Distribution Outside California: widely cultivated, established, especially eastern United States; native to Eurasia. Flowering Time: May--Jul
