Clarkia epilobioides (Torr. & A. Gray) A. Nelson & J.F. Macbr.
Stem: erect, < 7 dm, sparsely puberulent. Leaf: petiole < 7 mm; blade 15--25 mm, linear to narrowly lanceolate or oblanceolate. Inflorescence: axis in bud recurved at tip; buds pendent. Flower: hypanthium 0.5--1.5 mm; sepals staying fused in 4s or 2s, often red; corolla bowl-shaped, petals 5--12 mm, obovate, entire, white, fading pink, flecks 0; stamens 8, inner anthers smaller, paler; ovary cylindric, not obviously grooved, stigma not exserted beyond anthers. Chromosomes: n=9.
Ecology: Generally shady sites in woodland, chaparral; Elevation: < 1000 m. Bioregional Distribution: CW, SW; Distribution Outside California: to Arizona, northern Baja California. Flowering Time: Apr--May
