Chenopodium simplex (Torr.) Raf.
Habit: Annual 35--150 cm, generally few-branched distally. Leaf: blade 25--150 mm, 10--80 mm wide, broadly ovate to deltate, wavy-lobed, dark green, lobes 3--5(7), glabrous to sparsely powdery, base truncate to +- cordate, tip long-tapered to acute or occasionally acuminate. Inflorescence: flowers 1 or in cymes, in terminal and axillary panicles. Flower: sepals not enclosing fruit, calyx lobes ovate to lanceolate, +- keeled abaxially, glabrous to sparsely powdery, tip acute to obtuse. Fruit: 1.5--3 mm diam, wall weakly attached to seed, smooth, netted. Seed: horizontal, 1--1.5 mm diam, lenticular, margin broadly ridged; seed coat netted, radially grooved, shiny. Chromosomes: 2n=18.
Ecology: Disturbed or open places, scrub, conifer forest; Elevation: 1400--2400 m. Bioregional Distribution: n SN, MP, W&I; Distribution Outside California: to eastern United States. Flowering Time: Jul--Oct
