Ceanothus spinosus Nutt.
Habit: Plant erect, occasionally tree-like, open, < 6 m. Stem: ascending to erect; twigs flexible or rigid, thorn-like or not, green. Leaf: alternate, semi-deciduous; stipules scale-like; petiole 2--7 mm; blade 11--30 mm, 9--15 mm wide, elliptic to oblong, flat, +- firm, adaxially generally dark shiny green, glabrous, abaxially paler, glabrous or hairy, especially midrib, 1-ribbed from base, tip acute to obtuse, margin generally entire. Inflorescence: raceme- to panicle-like, 4--21 cm. Flower: blue to pale blue. Fruit: 4--7 mm wide, +- 3-ridged distally; horns 0. Chromosomes: 2n=24.
Ecology: Slopes, canyons, chaparral; Elevation: < 1200 m. Bioregional Distribution: s CCo, s SCoRO, SCo, WTR, PR; Distribution Outside California: northern Baja California. Flowering Time: Jan--May
