Caulanthus coulteri S. Watson
Habit: Annual, bristly proximally, hairs simple and stalked 2-rayed. Stem: 1--16 dm, not inflated. Leaf: basal 1--17 cm, narrowly oblong to oblanceolate, coarsely dentate to pinnately lobed, hairs simple and forked; cauline sessile, lanceolate, entire or dentate, base lobed to clasping. Inflorescence: terminal sterile flower cluster present. Flower: sepals erect to ascending, 5--15(19) mm, keeled, +- yellow-green, margins +- purple or brown; petals 8--25(30) mm, wavy-margined, white or +- purple, veins dark purple; filaments in 3 pairs of unequal length, free or longest pair fused. Fruit: spreading to reflexed, 3.5--15 cm, 2.2--3.5 mm wide, cylindric; style 1--4 mm, stigma strongly 2-lobed, lobes 0.5--1.5 mm, opposite valves; pedicel reflexed (spreading), 3--16 mm. Seed: 70--96, 1.5--3.5 mm, ovoid; cotyledons deeply 3-lobed. Chromosomes: 2n=28.
Ecology: Dry, exposed slopes, chaparral, woodland, scrub, grassland; Elevation: 80--2100 m. Bioregional Distribution: s SNF, Teh, sw SnJV, se SnFrB, e SCoRO, SCoRI, nw WTR, sw edge DMoj (Kern Co.). Flowering Time: Mar--Jul
