Castilleja montigena Heckard
Habit: Perennial herb to subshrub, 15--45 cm, branching distally, gray-green, glandular-puberulent throughout. Leaf: 2--5.5 cm, lanceolate to lance-linear, margin occasionally wavy, lobes 0--3, narrow-triangular, +- 1 cm. Inflorescence: 3--4 cm wide, shaggy-hairy; bracts < leaves, 3--5-lobed, tips generally acute, red to orange. Flower: calyx 15--20 mm, divided +- 1/4 abaxially and adaxially, +- 1/8 on sides, lobes acute, red; corolla 20--40 mm, beak 1--2 × tube, tube 12--23 mm, pale green-yellow; lower lip exserted; stigma slightly 2-lobed, exserted. Fruit: 10--15 mm. Seed: +- 1.5 mm, coat shallowly netted, walls irregularly ladder-like. Chromosomes: n=24,36.
Ecology: Dry, rocky, open slopes and flats in open forest, pinyon/juniper woodland; Elevation: 1800--2900 m. Bioregional Distribution: e SnBr. Flowering Time: May--Aug
