Carex hassei L.H. Bailey
Habit: Rhizomed (loosely cespitose). Leaf: blade 2--4 mm wide. Inflorescence: terminal spikelet staminate (pistillate) at tip, staminate part 1.2--3.5 mm wide, lowest non-basal spikelet generally separate, lateral ones erect to nodding, dense-clustered or not, 3--5, 7--25 mm, 3.5--4.5 mm wide, long-stalked or not, lower generally from near plant base; inflorescence bract >> inflorescence, sheath > 4.5 mm, mouth V- or U-shaped; lower staminate flower bracts 3--6 mm; pistillate flower bract < to >, appressed against, falling after fully expanded peri, obtuse to awned, red-brown to dark purple, margin, tip white. Pistillate Flower: stigmas 2(3). Fruit: 1.4--2 mm, 1--1.5 mm wide, lenticular (3-angled); peri generally 10--20, ascending to spreading, 1.9--3.1 mm, 1--1.6 mm wide, elliptic to +- obovate, stalked, generally veined, when fresh white to green (purple splotched, or base gold), walls +- translucent, generally fleshy at least at base, when dry green-white or pale gold, base tapered, tip wide, blunt, papillate at 10×, beak < 0.2 mm, tip often red-brown, notch 0.
Ecology: Springs, peatland, fens, moist meadows, serpentine or not; Elevation: < 2900 m. Bioregional Distribution: NCo, KR, NCoRH, CaRH, SNH, CCo, SnFrB, TR, PR, SNE, DMtns; Distribution Outside California: to British Columbia, Utah, Arizona. Fruiting Time: May--Aug Note: Like Carex aurea, variable in sex of terminal spikelet, but with peri greener, more elliptic, veined, papillate. Plants with 2--3 stigmas generally in KR serpentine fens.
