Calochortus leichtlinii Hook. f.
Stem: 20--60 cm, simple, bulblet generally 1 in sheath at base. Leaf: basal 10--15 cm, flat, withering; cauline 1--2, 2--9 cm, reduced upward. Inflorescence: +- umbel-like; flowers 1--5, erect; bracts paired, 1--5 cm. Flower: perianth bell-shaped; sepals 10--20 mm; petals 10--40 mm, white to smoky-blue, often tinged pink, red- to black-spotted above nectary, sparsely short-hairy near nectary, nectary +- depressed, +- ovate, densely short-hairy; filaments 5 mm, anthers 5--7 mm, sagittate, white to light yellow. Fruit: erect, 3--6 cm, narrowly lanceolate, angled, tip acute. Seed: flat, inflated, dark brown. Chromosomes: 2n=20.
Ecology: Common. Open, gravelly places in chaparral or montane conifer forest; Elevation: 1300--4000 m. Bioregional Distribution: CaRH, SNH, MP, SNE; Distribution Outside California: southern Oregon, western Nevada. Flowering Time: Jun--Aug
