Bromus commutatus Schrad.
Habit: Annual 40--120 cm. Leaf: lower sheath long-hairy; ligule 1--4 mm; blade 3--9 mm wide. Inflorescence: 6--18 cm; broad, spreading, some branches generally > 4 cm, 1--3 spikelets per branch. Spikelet: 15--30 mm, not strongly flattened, not widening in fruit, lemma obscuring most stalks in fruit; glumes glabrous, lower 5--7 mm, 3--5-veined, upper 6--9 mm, 5--9-veined; lemma 7.5--11 mm, margin generally broadly angled, back rounded, glabrous or hairy, veins not strongly raised, awn 4--10 mm, from < 1.5 mm below lemma tip, teeth < 1 mm, lowest lemma awn generally < others; anthers 1.3--2.5 mm; fruit flat or C-shaped in ×-section. Chromosomes: 2n=14,28,56.
Ecology: Disturbed areas; Elevation: < 2200 m. Bioregional Distribution: NW, CaR, n SN, c&s SNH, SNE, ScV, CCo, SnFrB, GB; Distribution Outside California: to British Columbia, eastern North America; native to Europe. Flowering Time: May--Jul
