Atrichoseris platyphylla (A. Gray) A. Gray
Habit: Annual, 2--18 dm, glabrous; sap milky. Stem: erect. Leaf: basal and proximal cauline generally flat against soil, sessile or tapering to a short, winged petiole, 3--10 cm, obovate, obtuse, finely dentate, gray-green, often purple-tinged, especially abaxially; cauline few, reduced distally on stem to inconspicuous, triangular scales. Inflorescence: heads liguliflorous, 1.5--2.5 cm diam, few to many in an open, +- scapose cyme-like cluster; involucre 6--10 mm; phyllaries in 2--4 series, outer short, triangular to lanceolate, inner 10--15, +- equal; receptacle +- rounded, epaleate. Flower: 30--60, fragrant; ligule white, readily withering. Fruit: 4--4.5 mm, +- cylindric or broadly club-shaped with 4--5 blunt angles, +- white; pappus 0. Chromosomes: 2n=18.
Ecology: Desert valleys, washes; Elevation: < 1600 m. Bioregional Distribution: D; Distribution Outside California: to Utah, Arizona, northeastern Baja California. Flowering Time: Feb--May
