Astragalus bolanderi A. Gray
Habit: Perennial herb, stiff, sparsely leafy; hairs fine, wavy or curly. Stem: +- decumbent to erect, 1.5--4 dm, basally leafless. Leaf: 3--16 cm; stipule sheaths +- loose; leaflets 13--27, 5--20 mm, +- oblanceolate to +- oblong, midrib prominent abaxially, extending to tip as small, hard point. Inflorescence: flowers 7--18, +- crowded, spreading. Flower: petals +- white, +- faintly lilac-tinged, banner 13--17.6 mm, recurved +- 40°, keel 9.8--12.4 mm. Fruit: body erect or +- spreading, at angle to stalk, 10--30 mm, 7--12 mm wide, swollen, incurved, glabrous, stiff-papery; stalk-like base ascending to +- reflexed, 5--12 mm, jointed at base; chambers 2 below beak, a wing-like outgrowth protruding into each from central septum. Chromosomes: 2n=22.
Ecology: Dry sandy, rocky areas on margins of meadows; Elevation: 1400--3300 m. Bioregional Distribution: CaRH, SNH; Distribution Outside California: west-central Nevada. Flowering Time: Jun--Sep
