Asclepias cryptoceras S. Watson
Habit: Perennial herb, +- glabrous. Stem: prostrate to decumbent. Leaf: opposite; petiole 0 to short; blade +- cordate or ovate to +- round, base rarely clasping stem. Inflorescence: generally terminal; peduncle 0--6 cm. Flower: corolla reflexed, green-yellow; hoods not elevated above corolla base, +- exceeded by anther head, pink-tan; horns included in hoods or reportedly 0. Fruit: erect on erect pedicels. Seed: 6--8 mm.
Ecology: Sand, gravel, clay, or shale of slopes, canyon bottoms, washes, arid plains; Elevation: 1400--2500 m. Bioregional Distribution: SNE (Mono Co.); Distribution Outside California: to Washington, Wyoming, Colorado, Arizona. Flowering Time: Apr--Jun
Synonyms: Asclepias cryptoceras subsp. cryptoceras; Asclepias cryptoceras S. Watson subsp. davisii (Woodson) Woodson
Unabridged Note: Asclepias cryptoceras subsp. davisii (Woodson) Woodson (hoods +- exceeded by anther head) and Asclepias cryptoceras subsp. cryptoceras (hoods generally +- exceeding anther head) have been recognized elsewhere, and although the latter has been reported for SNE (Mono Co.) and was listed in TJM(1993) as UNCOMMON, its occurrence in California has not been confirmed; morphological intergradation between the two, reportedly extensive from Mono Co. to southwestern Nevada (Intermountain Flora 4:48), precludes taxonomic recognition of these subspecies here.
