Amaranthus viridis L.
Habit: Monoecious. Stem: erect, 2--10 dm, simple or many-branched, green, +- glabrous. Leaf: petiole 30--80 mm; blade 20--80 mm, 15--50 mm wide, ovate to rhombic-ovate, base wedge-shaped, tip acute, entire or +- notched, margins flat. Inflorescence: axillary and terminal, flexible and nodding, branched or not, staminate with pistillate flowers; main axis 3--24 cm, 0.4--2 cm wide (including flowers), green; bracts 0.5--1 mm, < perianth, membranous, triangular-ovate, tip acute. Flower: staminate perianth parts 3, stamens 3; pistillate perianth parts 3, 0.8--1.5 mm, narrow-spoon-shaped to obovate, entire, tip +- obtuse. Fruit: indehiscent; 1.2--1.5 mm, +- spheric, green, brown in age, wrinkled; stigmas 3, erect. Seed: 1--1.2 mm, lenticular, brown-black, all-dotted, dull.
Ecology: Disturbed urban areas; Elevation: < 200 m. Bioregional Distribution: SCo; Distribution Outside California: eastern United States; +- cosmopolitan; tropics. native. Flowering Time: Jul--Oct
