Amaranthus blitoides S. Watson
Habit: Monoecious. Stem: prostrate, mat-forming, 30--120 cm, green or occasionally purple, glabrous. Leaf: petiole 3--15 mm; blade (5)10--30(40) mm, 4--10(15) mm wide, obovate to spoon-shaped, base wedge-shaped, tip obtuse, rounded, margins flat (+- wavy). Inflorescence: axillary clusters, green; bracts +- leaf-like, 1.5--3 mm, +- >= perianth, narrowly ovate, tip acute. Flower: staminate perianth parts (3)4, 1.5--2.5 mm; stamens (3)4--5; pistillate perianth parts 4--5, 1--3.5 mm, narrowly ovate to oblong, unequal, outer 2 > others, 2--3 mm; stigmas generally 3, spreading. Fruit: circumscissile; 2--2.5 mm, +- spheric to obovoid, green to occasionally purple, +- wrinkled near tip. Seed: 1.3--1.7 mm, lenticular, black. Chromosomes: 2n=32.
Ecology: Disturbed areas, roadsides, agricultural fields, sandy soils; Elevation: < 2500 m. Bioregional Distribution: CA-FP, W&I, D; Distribution Outside California: to Washington, eastern United States, central and southern Europe. Flowering Time: Jul--Nov
