Acacia melanoxylon R. Br.
Habit: Tree < 30 m, unarmed; root suckers common. Stem: twig +- angled, glabrous. Leaf: juvenile (on seedlings, young branches) 2-pinnate; adult simple (occasionally 2-pinnate at tips), 4--14 cm, generally 6--30 mm wide, lanceolate to oblanceolate, +- straight; petiole base 2--5 mm; longitudinal veins 3--5, +- prominent. Inflorescence: raceme of 2--8 heads < leaves. Flower: pale yellow. Fruit: 5--15 cm, 4--8 mm wide, curved, twisted, flat, leathery, dark brown, glabrous. Seed: aril yellow to red, encircling seed in an irregular, double fold.
Ecology: Uncommon. Disturbed areas; Elevation: < 200 m. Bioregional Distribution: NCo, CCo, SnFrB, SCo, n ChI, PR; Distribution Outside California: native to southeastern and eastern Australia. Flowering Time: Feb--Mar
