Arnica chamissonis Less.
Habit: Plant 2--8 dm, +- hairy, generally glandular distally. Stem: 1, branched distally. Leaf: cauline 4--10 pairs, sessile or short-petioled, 5--20(30) cm, blade (ob)lanceolate, +- entire, distal +- reduced. Inflorescence: heads radiate, 3--10; involucre 8--15 mm, bell-shaped; phyllaries nearly linear to narrowly lanceolate, +- obtuse, adaxial face generally hair-tufted near tip. Ray Flower: 8--20; ray 10--20 mm. Disk Flower: corolla +- densely soft-hairy, stalked-glandular, tube generally 3--4.5 mm. Fruit: 3--8 mm, +- glabrous to short-hairy, glandular; pappus short-barbed or weakly +- plumose, dirty white to straw-colored. Chromosomes: 2n=38,57,76.
Ecology: Damp meadows, rocky places, conifer forest; Elevation: 1800--3500 m. Bioregional Distribution: KR, CaR, SN, SnBr, Wrn, n SNE, W&I; Distribution Outside California: to British Columbia, Montana, New Mexico. Flowering Time: Jul--Aug Note: Generally asexual.
