Hupa to WIllow Creek, July 29
The Madrona on the Hupa Trail to Trinity Summit, struggling for light, its base or trunk jammed in tightly against the [fare] of a great Maul Oak. They started so. Did the Maul Oak yield a bit? Not one [jot]. It looks all and the Madrone grew its branch high and sinuously outreaching until it hot its crown into a bit of unoccupied space between a pine tree and the oak. [Gh] Madrona! Truly a 'Gallant of the Glade." Madrona does not stand [within] [?] with the White Man. Those on the school campus at Hupa are dying [?] Dr. Lindley.
