The [?] and mountain tops are filled up and covered with fog, so that as we travel along the trail on the sides of the canons [=canyons?] (which are very narrow with steep walls) the distances suggest fearful depths below. At Gomez's Ranch we took the wrong trail and got away off in the mountains making a circuit towards Davis. At last I suggested to Mr. Davy that he mark north on the ground. His compass then showed that he was off 180_ and I, 90_. We went back to Gomez and got the right trail to [Saus'?] Mill arriving in the dark.
