Point Reyes Penins.

The hills of the Peninsula do not look quite as bare viewed from the west as do those on the east side of Tamales [sic] Bay seen from Inverness. The tops of the former have some show of Bishop Pine on their tops as well as some brush in the canons [canyons?] which is always found on the west side of a range in this part of California near the coast. Away to the northwest I can see that the hills facing the ocean (above Tomales Bay) are bare and

brown oceanward, but their tops have sharply defined crowns or tufts of trees--doubtless redwood.
Bishop Pine is not by any means on the decrease on the Peninsula. Apparently it does not extend far out towards Tomales Point, but between the summit of the Point Reyes wagon road and Inverness there are young forests galore. These young trees are of nearly one generation, 15 or 20 ft. h. and growing very densely and forming a very even and very pure forest. The forest seems to be
