"Eugene ("Gene") Marshall was a likeable lad. He lived afterwards at Martinez. He might be there still.

"I inspected the cornerstone of the old college when it was torn down. It was made of soft sandstone and the [cairty] for the documents lined with tin. The stone absorbed water, being porous, and the tin rusted. I cut out a piece of the cornerstone for a relic and had it until a few years ago. I had also a picture of the school at Oilers.

"Tom Force (father of Dan) came to California in 1850. He forded the waters where stood Doc Tilson's home in

Vacaville (at which point there was later a bridge, opposite the brick warehouse on south bank). People forded the Alamo in a number of places above our ranch.

"Opposite the later Wilson place down Brock lane was the Fred Wise place. His name was originally [Weirse]. He married Jim Hawkins' daughter. He "broke up" and his very fine farming machinery was sold. It made me sad. I remember seeing some of it come by our place.

"Olingers. Their daughter was Mrs. Hutton. The Hutton's had four children: Fred, Will, Olin, Hattie. When I taught at Pena school, I remember coming home one day through Vacaville and I
