66_42 The Araquipa Hills The lateral ridges on the east side have a remarkable regularity. There are fifteen ridges as I remember them and all lie essentially at right angles to the axis of the ridge. Each of these little ridges is sharply defined against the plain by a little rounded hill or knoll at its foot, though in some of them this structure is not clear---but in most it is marked |
66_43 much diversified and pleasing aspect nowhere in California with all its foothills have I been able to find hills with just the structure of these-making the same picture. When one, however, looks at the same range of hills from the west side, from Lagoon Valley, these hills have no distinctive character at all. The simply irregular pattern is one that can be matched in a thousand places about the oval of the Great Valley. _ Nov. 22, 1931, Went to Little Oak this day for a flying trip, leaving Berkeley near 11:00, getting back at 5:00. Araquipa is more commonly, or rather, rightly, correctly spelled Arequipa.
