write, they will not use the training they have been given. They will not write a letter; they will not write a memorandum or a note. Thirty years ago, I well remember, some mom on the campus tried to see me for a whole month. He had to make answer, - simple assent or dissent _ to a query put to him. I was away part of the time with students in the field and only after a month did he find me. He came in to my laboratory, said _Yes_ and turned and went out. That one word was all there was to say. I shall never forget it.
Even scholarly men, often, will not write. Dr. J.A.B. Fry is a scholarly man. He saw a letter in my file relating to early days in Vaca Valley, and wished

extremely to have a copy. I pondered the matter for several weeks and then directed my secretary to make a copy, which was sent him. Thereupon Dr. Fry tried in every way for a long time to see me. He came to my laboratory; he came to my house; he tried the telephone. I was away in Southern California and it was no use. Finally, I did the unusual thing _ I went to University Meeting one day in the Cowell Gymnasium _ and Dr. Fry saw me and at once came to where I was sitting to speak of his pleasure in having the letter. No less than fifty anecdotes could be stirred out of memory-concerning the refusal or dislike of writing. But all this was different when I was a child.
