Orchard Trees
Quince. Have been grown since ancient times. Used with us for making jelly. Added a variety to the home orchard tho_ it had only one use. There is a U.S.D.A. Leaflet No. 158 on _Quince Growing_ (1938) but it contains nothing much.

Animals, Wild and Domestic
We spoke of a herd of cattle, a drove of hogs, a band of horses, a flock of geese or of blackbirds, a swarm of bees, a pack of wolves. A considerable list of group terms for animals is found in Cal. Ranger, Sept. 6, 1940 (vol. 11, no. 41).

Cont. from p. 144. Ore. Bulletin, Feb., 1941. See _Orchard Trees_ file.

Little Oak, scarcity of timber at in early days. Cf. Men and Manners, 14:107.

The Old College Bell
In the days of the California Baptist College the Garnetts of Dixon sent sons and daughters to the college. I remember once taking my sister Frankie in to the village late one afternoon on account of some occasion at the college in the evening. As we neared the village, - we were riding _ a rider came to meet me. It was Neat Garnett. He had been sent by Mrs. Gregory, wife of the President of the College, with a message to Little Oak, fearing my sister might not come on account of the stormy winter weather. This incident was probably about December, 1878.

-cf. my letter to H.S. Cary, Feb. 16, 1942; and a letter from her in Vaca Valley file II.
