of the Harbison place! Another remark: we were speaking of the old-time _tug-bottom chairs_ on the ranches. Mrs. H. said they were called _Campbellite chairs._ She said of Grandpa Hawkins that he was a well-known and well-to-do citizen and always had a good supply of provisions and eatables.

Books
Books, especially story books were scarce. One day sister Frances got hold of a Family Fireside Journal that had in it a thrilling tale about the frontier settlers and Indians. All three of us sister Frances, Sister Mary and I got down on the ground by the side of the lane at the big trees and Frances read while Mary and I listened breathless to the tale. The Indian attack on the settlement was led up to in the most dramatic manner when suddenly the frontier romance broke off suddenly. The next and last page had been taken out and was gone!
The early winter twilight fell about us. We looked at each other aghast, huddled close together on the ground. It came to us suddenly that we should never know (cont. p. 163)

The Old College
I recovered the middle initial of one teacher from a copy of _Philosophy of Natural History_ by John Ware. This was a gift from Professor Granville F. Foster. See fly leaf. Preceding him was Professor Carson, an Englishman or at least Canadian.

whether the fleeing girl escaped with her life and made the next settlement or was overtaken and scalped. The stars now twinkled aloft; the dusk fell tighter; down the lane on the little rise of ground where he had his village, the ground owl hooted weirdly. Almost affrighted we shuddered with a certain secret delight in the terrifying juncture and all at once fled to the shelter of the home roof, burst in at the door, and stood happily before the blazing logs in the great fireplace; here was safety, peace, protection. _ c. 1936.
