Taft, Kern County
--Maricopa and Taft lie behind, to the west of, the first low range of foothills on the west side of the San Joaquin Valley in this region, on a valley floor (Midway Valley, 1000 feet, as against about 325 on the plain proper). The foothills named are the Elk Hills and Midway Hills. Midway Valley opens out southeasterly on to the San Joaquin plain.
I take the road to McKittrick. Northerly from Taft 1 1/2 mi. about I collect:
No. 20,221. Franseria acanthicarpa (Hook.) Cov. 1 1/4 ft. h., several stems from base, ascending, branching; annual. Dry flat.
No. 20,222. Helianthus annuus Erect, branching, spreading loosely, 3 1/2 ft. high. It

is between this point and San Jose often common along the roads and 6 to 8 feet high.

No. 20,223. Gutierrezia bracteata Abrams Erect bush; stems of spm. [specimen] taken nearly at ground.

No. 20,224. Trichostema lanceolatum Bth. [Benth.] This is the dominant on the dead-grassy rolling plain bordering the Kettleman Hills, 9 to 18 in. high. It is the only living thing on the plain save Gutierrezia (No. 20,225) and Eremocarpus setigerus, both of which are very subordinate. The plants are somewhat bushy in this way: The main stem is short or shortly branched 1 to 6
