There is also here the Tamarack, Red Fir, Monticola, Jeffreyi.

There are fine trees on the Big Arroyo and in the Basin just beyond Little Claire Lake - see ahead. In Soda Canon there were fine Red Firs 6 or 7 ft. through and around Shotgun (Alexander) Pass fine big Foxtails sloping up to their toothpick summits - dead & shining - but 5 or 6 ft. through at the base.

Mr Hopping has measured Sugar Pine conea 19 1/2 in. long. The measurement of monticola cones given by Lemmon he thinks away off; so do I.

Pinus monticola in Soda Canon has a very smooth trunk, though slightly checked. No trunk can compare in smoothness with the Tamarack.
Pinus monticola 1 yr. old cones slender, often curved, even very much curved at point, black and green.
After traveling about 3 miles up Soda Canon we turned up (South) a most sharp and difficult hill
