Big Arroyo
Upper Kern region

Camped in the very bottom of the Big Arroyo canon at a little meadow. Night Camp.
Tomorrow we are to cross the "Poison Meadow Country" viz. Soda Canon. We shall find the skeletons of riding and pack animals, horses and mules whitening in the meadows. As to what is the poison is not known. Some say one thing, some another. Most mountaineers think it some plant. A few say it is the water. Funston, an old-timer here, now dead,
claimed death was caused by an indigestible "moss" and that it is not poison

but acute indigestion. Mr. H. does not believe that there is any poison in the Big Arroyo meadows, nor any beyond the Pass, Alexander Pass, at the head of Shotgun. He also thinks the first two meadows in Soda Canon safe but will not live up to his belief by risking his animals eating there. We are to lead our animals tomorrow to prevent their eating there or anywhere this side of Shotgun. One man lost five animals on one of the meadows and put up a sign recording his loss and cursing the country. The animal dies the same
