Whitney Creek. Mt. Whitney crossing of the stream to the second we made our way above and around the rocky slit in the cliffs through which the Whitney cuts. This is in line with the high main cliffs of the Kern Canon wall. All the way down the gorge we met Foxtail and Tamarack and low down Red Fir. There was a single low Acer glabrum at Hot Haste camp, its trunk and branches exceedingly white, its leaves edged already with the crimson of autumn.

- Parnassia, no. 1098. near Hot Haste Camp, Whitney Creek gorge. Stamens 5, filaments unequal. Staminodia cleft into 11 to 14 filaments with small anthers, and a fewer number of short filaments with abortive anthers. Flowers white, veined. See p. 110.

Pinus monticola in the Whitney Gorge!

At 3:55 we got through the gorge on to the Kern Canon Floor by working down the lower less steep canon side of the main river.
On Whitney the highest trees Foxtails & Tamarack about equally divide honors.
