Saddled and off at 7:00. We found a clear trail down Whitney (Crabtree Creek) for a long distance. We only met difficulty at a place where we were forced to cross the stream, the opposite side of the canon showing fair going. We had to build a trail through the lower part of a rock floe to the stream

and the crossing was very bad. Then we walked a steep hillside and down into the creek again - crossing it. Here a great rock floe barred progress and we [roamed] for about 1 hr. (Hot Haste Camp - tin put on fir tree). Then we determined, rather than go back, to work our way along the top of the talus 200 or 300 ft. above at the base of the walls. We built 1/4 mile of trail before we succeeded in getting beyond the cliffs and out on to a sloping hill leading down to the Kern Bed. From this first
