Mt. Whitney

the summit was very satisfactory. It was a clear day and the mountain ranges stood out well, the Kaweah group, the Sawtooth range, the Mt. Brewer group, and the confused mass of peaks toward the north. South, Olancha Peak (Monache of LeConte's Map) was very prominent and also a high peak to the very south. On the summit of Whitney at the monument I met a man (see also p. 62) from the desert side who knew things, who had traveled everywhere

through the mountains eastward and who pointed out to us the prominent ranges. One can see south-eastward the Panamint Range, crowned by the lofty Telescope Peak. I noted this mountain while at Independence. Just over the Panamint Range lies Death Valley. In Inyo Co. is the lowest and at the same time the highest point in the U.S. We look down 11,000 feet and over on to Lone Pine in Owen's Valley. The Grape Vine Range beyond Death's Valley was visible. Also
