Foxtail Camp.

How delightful is the music of the river_; we are camped on its bank and its loud song is never tiresome.
The clear intense blue of the sky at this altitude is noteworthy. On this account the peaks stand out very sharply.

At Foxtail Camp there are but two trees - pines: Foxtail and Tamarack. The Tamarack extends as high as the Foxtail apparently for this is very near the Timber line.

Langley Camp. Aug 7.

Got up at 5:00 or before and prepared to start for Langley Canmp and Mt. Whitney. It was exceedingly cold but we had a hot fire of Tamarack stumps and branches. Aftr a hearty breakfast we saddled Blossom and Sierra and rode up to Langley Mdw. The meadow is strewn with the timbers and framework of the meridian base lines made by the U.S. Astronomical Expedition. Here we tied our animals and began the up trail.
