Old Hot Haste has a habit of veering to the right on a trail; if a trail passes to the left of a tree he will often pass to the right. He rarely bumps a tree, even where there is just room, and will swing out just in time to save his pack when you fancy he is going to bump. He is a most knowing old mule. To night the four mules hit the back trail just before dusk and Mr. Hopping succeeded in overtaking them only at Whitney Creek. Three were hobbled, Sierra leading Blossom not hobbled fleeting along after her usual fashion. This morning Hot Haste was limping and investigation showed that he had lost a shoe. He had wedged his foot in somewhere between the rocks, doubtless, and being hobbled the shoe was strained off.
