me on seeing great patches of D. Jeffreyi in Farewell Gap that there ought to be common specific names. There are too many common generic names in use. Mr. H. says Dodecatheon Jeffreyi is called "Darts" here in this region. They are so large that the name is very apt. Shooting Star had best go to D. patulum and Mosquito Bills or Sailor's Caps to D. Hendersoni. Maybe the latter is taken from some European plant, so it would be well to investigate.

The wisdom of the ancient mule Hot Haste furnishes us unending amusement. He is the leader of our little botanical mule train and when he sees a "camp" he turns invariably for he can always spot a place where parties have stopped even though there is nothing more than a few burnt sticks. Then again he will leave the trail and when headed off will give his head a protesting shake and turn back. Sometimes we attempt to drive him back to the point where he left the trail but he will elude us and make a short cut for the trail and start along
