Farewell Gap,

The round-topped Sequoias lend a charming diversity to the ridges between Redwood Canon and Weishar's Mill. The pines and firs are so symmetrical and so uniform in their tops that it is pleasing to see the round tops of the Sequoias rising out of the monotony around them.
The effect is in one way peculiar to the mind in that the reverse association as to height usually holds. In the Seaward or Middle North

Coast Ranges the round tops are those of the oaks or madrone, and the spiney tops of Redwood, Douglas Spruce or Pine rise above them always.

We lunched at 11:30 at a little stream, 3/4 of a mile below the summit.

The alpine streamlets are beautiful with the Alpine Mimulus (No. ) that grows in their beds. The water rushing over the gravelly or rocky bed, the cushiony mats of the leaves, the very large flowers stalked
