him that if he would look in the work on Cactaceae by Britton and Rose, he would find in it the genus Cactus with each species described and its geographic range. So I wrote out the reference for him and sent him to the library for the set. It is likely he is utterly untrained and quite ignorant like most. --Nove. 17, 1936

--Drove to St. Helena Sanitarium this Monday afternoon (Nov. 30) reaching there at 5:00 o'clock. Next morning I walked up the road towards Howell Mt., taking the short cut up the gully that heads towards Four Corners. On this trail I measure individuals of Arctostaphylos manzanita

[Acrtostaphylos manzanita] as follows:
No. 1. Trunk 30 in. circ. at 18 in. above ground; 12 ft. high.
No. 2. Trunk 4 ft. 5 in. circ. at 4 in. above ground. This is the smallest part of trunk which branches at 18 in. from groung. At 4 inches I make the diam. = 20 in. At 18 in. above ground I make the diam. = 26 in. This is the largest diam. at that height. Height of individual = 14 ft.
No. 3. Trunk 6 ft. h. before branching at 3 ft., very uniform in diam. from top to bottom = 14 in. Individual 19 ft. h.
