- Left Berkeley on Tuesday after arrived at the Little Oak ranch at early candle light. Next morning went into Vacaville to have the motor tuned up. The garage [ mechanics] [looked] [down] the engine and found a broken valve. It was noon the next day before I got free of the repair men's place. Took the road to Winters. Beyond Madison, on the day rolling gravely [sun-bitten ] treeless plains saw a ranch which was raising turkeys. It was something of a sight to see nearly a thousand of them feeding in the fields, picking up shattered grain in the stubble.
