It was bitter cold when we turned out at 4:30 in the morning to make ready to cross the Sierran axis that day. The wind blew not strong but cold, and the mules in the meadow in front of us stand with their tails turned to the wind. We find the water frozen in camp utensils, but start a fire and get our breakfast. Then we break camp, saddle and pack our mules and get off on the trail from Bullfrog Lake to Kearsarge Pass. We start up the zig-zag. About half-way up I look up into the pass, sharp as a knife edge in the brilliant morning air; when suddenly a pack mule sticks his head over the edge! It is as if he used his jaw for leverage to pull up his loaded body and clamber over the edge. After a bit another mule did the same and followed the first down the
