_Got a very early start, being wakened by the teamsters at the ungodly hour of 3:30.
Found the road down dusty and hot and altogether uncomfortable after the cleanliness and coolness of the high forests.

_We kept straight on, not stopping for lunch but expecting to reach Three Rivers by 1:00 oclock, which we did a little after 1:00. Here we pastured the mules

for 15 c a day, in Britten's pasture.

In the evening I saddled up Sierra --Mr. Britten loaning me a saddle -- and went up to Redstone Park to see Mr. Hopping. He had brought out my bundle of plants from the Giant Forest all right and had seemed pleased at being asked to go on the Whitney Trip, which I proposed to make in the few days left me -- two weeks. The next morning I took the stage out to Visalia to purchase
